ST. LOUIS ART SONG

In addition to a busy teaching and performing schedule, Joe typically has a couple projects running on the side.  Here is information about his current endeavors:

In 2018, Joe founded St. Louis Art Song, a performing organization that provides free art song recitals throughout the St. Louis region.  Featuring cohesive programming and compelling performances, its intimate and personable settings make it a unique experience for St. Louis concertgoers.  In addition to being founder, Joe is Artistic Director for St. Louis Art Song.

The Business of Being a Pianist

THE BUSINESS OF BEING A PIANIST

Joe’s doctoral project was a survey of how collaborative piano programs are run, including observation and study of curriculum, graduate assistantships, lessons, studio classes, and more.  It became clear to him that the vast number of skills collaborative pianists must absorb, as well as business skills required to be successful, could not be distilled into a two (or more) year degree.  As most programs heavily favor the musical skills, Joe started The Business of Being a Pianist, which was a summer workshop at McKendree University.  The primary focus of the program was the business aspect of being a musician; topics included taxes, branding, marketing, networking, headshots, bios, and more.  In addition, well-respected St. Louis pianists gave classes in gigging as well as masterclasses.

The program’s concept has been adopted by Olivet Nazarene University, which has renamed the workshop The Patchwork Pianist.  Joe retains his involvement in an advisor role.  See their website for the most current information on this great resource.
